The Rolling Stones – Gimme Shelter

The Rolling Stones are a rock band from England formed in 1962. The band was formed by Brian Jones on guitar, Mick Jagger on lead vocals, Keith Richards on guitar, Bill Wyman on bass, and Charlie Watts on drums. They were influenced by the blues and rock n’ roll and began by playing covers before writing their own material. The band was recognized on an international level and was a part of the rise in popularity of many British musicians and bands in the 1960’s. The Rolling Stones released many commercially successful albums throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s and to this day are recognized as one of the greatest bands of all time.

The Rolling Stones song “Gimme Shelter” released in 1969 comments on the violence in the era of the Vietnam War. The themes of violence, tension, and war are reflected not only in the lyrics but in the melody and tone of the song. While the song joined the commentary on the Vietnam War, it was inspired by the homelessness present in London. The song includes screaming and the phrase “rape, murder, it’s just a shot away” throughout it. The harshness of the song draws attention to the bitterness and overall climate of the world in the time of war. Although this song was released during the time of the Vietnam War, it can apply to other instances of violence throughout history and in the modern day, and highlights the horrible reality of violence in the world.
