Internationally recognized singer and songwriter Pink was born Alicia Beth Moore in Doylestown, Pennsylvania on September 8, 1979. As a teen she wrote introspective music as an outlet for her emotions and began performing at clubs in Philadelphia at the age of fourteen. After being a member of the signed girl group, Choice, Pink began to release her own music in 1999. Pink has always pushed the envelope as an artist from her edgy fashion choices to rebellious themes in her music. Pink has been known to use her fame to advocate for social justice. She has supported various charities and has been a known advocate for animal rights and LGBTQ rights.
In the 2005 song “Dear Mr. President”, Pink addresses then-president, George W. Bush. She calls attention to the many struggles people are facing in the country and criticizes Bush’s administration in this song. She directly criticizes Bush’s stance on women’s rights, the Iraq War, LGBTQ rights, and education. The way the lyrics are set up as a conversation with Bush emphasizes how Pink believes that the country’s administration needs more empathy and understanding. When Pink asks Bush “how do you sleep while the rest of us cry”, she promotes the idea that Bush’s actions are affecting peoples’ daily lives and that Bush needs to be more human in the way he runs the country.
